In partnership with his counterparts at SMRT and MaineGeneral Medical Center, TRO Jung|Brannen’s Paul Kondrat, PE, LEED AP BD+C prepared a presentation on the topic of MaineGeneral’s new regional hospital achieving energy optimization and cost savings. This $312 million replacement hospital project in Augusta, Maine, is underway through an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) three-party agreement. IPD harnesses the talents of the project’s owner, designers, engineers, contractors, and certain subcontractors and forges them into a single collaborative team from the outset of a project.
Attendees of last week’s New England Healthcare Engineers Society (NEHES) Fall Conference learned about the “now and then” of MaineGeneral’s infrastructure and why the 640,000 square foot new regional hospital will be a safer, healthier, and more efficient to own and operate. The big savings explained include the sustainability measures MaineGeneral is implementing to save $1.2 million dollars annually on energy costs and over 13,000,000 gallons worth of annual water savings. These sums do not even begin to cover the potential payback by the different components of the building equipment and systems. Additionally, attendees learned how MaineGeneral and the design team joined forces through IPD to research different system options. As partners, they made specific, informed choices to bring long term value to the owner as a sustainable, energy-saving project in the healthcare industry. Tried and true measures are balanced with the latest developments in healthcare facility management, design, operation, and maintenance techniques.
