Mission SECU Cancer Center

Asheville, NC

Mission Hospital’s Outpatient Cancer Center in Asheville, NC reflects the community’s regional architectural vernacular while providing a spiritually nurturing and state-of –the-art cancer treatment facility. The center provides comprehensive cancer treatment including diagnostic imaging, radiation, chemotherapy, clinics, and patient support services. Beyond clinical care, patients and their families are offered a range of services including financial, nutritional, educational and spiritual support, all with their respective designated areas.

The use of indigenous wood and stone, access to natural light, orientation to garden views and mountain vistas, embed the center into a healing landscape. Terracing the landscape of the naturally steep site allows areas on the lower level of the building- radiation therapy and PET CT to have access to natural light from skylights as well as views to the outside.

The main level is organized around a great hall with stone fireplaces. It houses a resource library, education and conference rooms, meditation spaces, a café, a retail boutique, and the pharmacy. The second level houses pediatric and adolescent oncology, multidisciplinary clinics, and research offices. Adult infusion is found on the third level. On the roof level, a terrace garden provides space for outdoor activities and extensive views to the mountains and the city skyline.

This project achieved LEED Gold and additionally received Honorable Mention from AIA Birmingham.
